The Summary!

Reviews

It’s the tenth post! As it brings the end of this series of Internet memes, I want to summarise what I have written in this semester.

In Countryball, we know that Internet memes can bring the history knowledge to us with a lot of fun in the same time.
In Chuck Norris facts, we know Internet memes require some kind of “consensus”, or "unspoken understanding", to be functioned, which implies Internet memes are kinds of subcultures.
In Black Twitter, we know Internet memes can be  subcultures of other bigger subcultures, even sometimes against each others.
In Two-sentence stories, Internet memes show their literary side in an extremely short form.

Below those articles written to illustrate the basis of Internet memes, I gave you guys introductions to some of most famous sites in the world, respectively. 4Chan, 9GAG, and Reddit, as places where Internet memes are born, used, and interacted, are crucially important to have thorough datas about Internet memes. To look up detailed information of those tricky memes, I found Know Your Memes for you.

Benefits of Internet memes

  • It’s fun to read, or watch
  • It’s informative to read, or watch
  • It’s good to learn English

The Summary of summary

Exercise

Hi

It has been the sixth post since I started introducing some famous Internet meme. Last week, I even gave you guys the introduction to the famous (infamous as well) website: 4Chan. Since I always think that it’s better to take an exercise than to keep listening to a teacher, today, I will crop some real threads from some boards of 4Chan, and then analyze the usage of the memes.

/int/

As I’ve introduced in the last week’s post, /int/ is the place where people in different countries have fun with each other. Right from a replier’s name(usually Anonymous), there’s the replier’s country flag; that’s the characteristic of /int/.
In this thread, the OP, standing for “Original Poster”, is in New Zealand, and the repliers are in New Zealand, Poland, Israel, and Norway, respectively.
Firstly, the OP started the discussion about some candidate of the new flag of New Zealand, which is not that high-discussed in Taiwan, with some indecent words of course. Secondly, a replier right below the OP claimed none of them should be changed, with the famous meme, Smug frog, and some indecent words of course. Thirdly, the Polish guy replied another reply (green one), with a rage comic meme, claiming it was ridiculous. Forthly, the polite Israeli guy also said he/she thought the original one is good enough. Finally, the Norwegian showed Australia’s flag with the satiric question: “How about this one?”

Question?

Question? Maybe you’ll think “It’s fun, though, what’s the benefit reading this kind of thread”? My answer to that is, through this thread, we obtain
1.     news which Taiwan media won’t give,
2.     knowledge of memes,
3.     humor,
4.     the ability of ignoring indecent words.

Summary

Living in this land, we have less chance than others outside the world gaining the information. Seriously, I didn’t know the difference between the flags of New Zealand and Australia before this, but through interacting with people in different nations, even just having fun with them, we know the world much more.

An interesting site

About memes

No matter how fun they are, what kinds they are, memes are determined to be used. They were born by usage; they have to keep existing by usage, too!

So, where are internet memes being used? It’s the topic I am going to introduce today.

4Chan

"4chan is an English-language imageboard website. Users generally post anonymously, with the most recent posts appearing above the rest. 4chan is split into various boards with their own specific content and guidelines. Registration is not required, nor is it possible (except for staff).[1]"
As you can see above, except it’s image-based, 4Chan is similar to PTT, a text-based forum also containing anonymous post. As my view, some boards on 4Chan are not appropriate for normal people to browse, such as /b/.
"Gawker.com's Nick Douglas summarized /b/ as a board where "people try to shock, entertain, and coax free porn from each other." /b/ has a "no rules" policy, except for bans on certain illegal content, such as child pornography, invasions of other websites (posting floods of disruptive content), and under-18 viewing, all of which are inherited from site-wide rules.[2]"
On some boards, however, you can enjoy browsing some fun, satiric posts about each others, such like /int/, which stands for International. If you like manga, anime, or other Japanese subculture, there is, of course, /a/, for Anime & Manga.

Summary

I have introduced the famous forum in the western Internet, but feel free to develop your own! See you next week!
